Birmingham International Airport's seven council owners plan to hand over a majority stake to a group of backers to avoid enforced sale to one major backer, the Birmingham Post reports (p23).

The airport's seven council owners are trying to attract up to £400 million for development work. They are seeking a meeting with Transport Secretary John Macgregor to obtain his approval.

Under the plan a number of investors would take a share in the airport but the councils would remain the largest group on the board. The Birmingham Post reports board chairman Sir Stan Yapp said companies were 'queueing up' for a stake although he would not name them.
