Birmingham City Council's new standards committee has been formally set up, although a final decision on the two independent members, including a chairman, will not be made until next month, reports The Birmingham Post (p3).

The council yesterday appointed the four elected members of the committee - Sybil Spence (Lab), Richard Knowles (Lab), Reg Hales (Con) and David Osbourne (Lib Dem).

Council leader Theresa Stewart told the full council: 'I am very pleased we are establishing this committee and that it has been done with three-party support. While I do not believe Birmingham City Council has got a significant problem, it is essential that there is a mechanism to deal with allegations by a body that can be seen to be, and will be, independent.'
