The Financial Times (p8) reports that Birmingham city council is preparing to shed 370 full time jobs as part of a package to reduce spending by£27m next year.

Council leader Theresa Stewart said the government had limited Birmingham to a 1.1 per cent rise worth£10.4m in next year's budget.

'Our predictions for 1998-9, if the present public expenditure policies remain unchanged, indicate that we could be facing at least another£35m to£40m of cuts,' she told the paper.
