The Financial Times (p8) reports that Birmingham city council has revealed it has been approached by a number of property developers wanting to convert Baskerville House - currently the economic development department - into a 140 room hotel.

Martin Brooks, chair of the council's economic development committee, told the paper: 'We know the market is there and we are keen to encourage more commercial development in that area.

'We also know that the council is going to need less space because of declining resources and contracting out activities.'
