A Solihull businessman has criticised plans for Birmingham to twin with Johannesburg, claiming that the South Africa city has one of the world's highest crime rates, The Birmingham Post (p1) reports.

'Ought we be taking our place on the world stage with a city like this?' asked Gordon Creswell, who was himself robbed at gunpoint in Johannesburg on the day that a delegation of Birmingham councillors arrived in the city to draw up proposals for formally twinning the two authorities.

A statement issued by Birmingham said that crime would not deter the council from 'entering a parntership agreement with one of the world's great cities'.
