Compulsory redundancies are threatened at Birmingham City Council which yesterday released details of its budget which will lead to council tax increases of 11.4%.

The authority faces cuts of £48m and the loss of 727 jobs, The Birmingham Post reports (p2).

Council leader Theresa Stewart said the city should have received an extra £30m from the government but this money had been redirected to London and the South East.
