Labour Birmingham city councillors will vie for the top positions within the party group with appointments to be made at its annual meeting on May 6, reports the Birmingham Post (p1).

The paper says a rift has developed between moderate and left-wing members and claims some councillors have drawn up a slate of left-wing councillors to support when the vote is taken.

However, members have denied there is a faction and say they have simply formed a discussion group.
