A leading Labour member of Birmingham City Council has resigned accusing her colleagues of ostracising her and giving her little support in her personal problems since the break up of her marriage, reports the Birmingham Post (p1).

Najma Haffez's official statement was that she needed to spend more time with her two children and could not commit the amount of time and energy the ward and local residents had a right to expect.

She has been chair of education, social services and community affairs and is expected to contend Roy Hattersley's parliamentary seat at the next general election, the paper reports.
