All departments, except education, at Birmingham City Council have been told to examine how they might cut spending by 15% in the next financial year and 10% in 1997-98, reports the Financial Times (p10).

Next financial year the council expects to cut its net spending estimate of £1.02bn by up to £68m with further cuts of £108m and £129m in each of the two following years, the paper reports.

Between the 1995-96 financial year and 1998-99 it calculates that capital spending will have to fall by 55% to £74m from £161m.
