In the wake of criticism from Conservative councillors and others that it had put up festive lights rather than Christmas lights, Labour controlled Birmingham city council has now put up a Merry Christmas banner, the Birmingham Post reports (p1).

The Birmingham Post, which carried the original story, also reports on a Commons motion by nine Labour MPs which criticised the paper for its earlier actions.

Birmingham dpeuty leader Bryan Bird is reported as saying: 'We have never ever banned anything to do with Christmas. Nor will we - and this banner proves it.'
