Birmingham City Council's attempts at reducing car use in the city are profiled in The Guardian Society section (p5).

Birmingham has been planned over the last 30 years to cater for the car and the region's economy has been built on car assembly plants, however, local council chiefs have now refocused their transport priorities.

The paper says that Birmingham is planning a new light rail system, more bus lanes, greater pedestrian access and more restrictions on cars in the city.
