Birmingham city council will this week open a new 'political correctness unit' at a cost to the taxpayer of£1.6m a year, the Mail On Sunday claimed (Jan 12, p8).

Its new equality unit will be headed by a director earning£53,000 a year and a£40,000 assistant, the paper said.

The newspaper said that considerable power would be vested in the unit. Not only would it scrutinise sexual and racial equality, but it would also police council policies appointments and the behaviour of individuals.
