Birmingham city council Tories plan to turn their back on prestigious projects and make more efforts delivering traditional public services if they win control of Birmingham in elections next year, the Birmingham Post reports (p4).

The paper says that the move echoes that by the Labour council which has recently adopted a 'back to basics' approach. The Conservatives are defending only six of the 39 seats up for grabs in May with Labour in its most vulnerable position for years, says the paper. However Labour members are said to be quietly confident because of the Tories poor showing nationally but the Liberal Democrats could hold power on a hung council as their support has been growing in Birmingham.
