Birmingham City Council neighbourhood office Unison members will ballot for industrial action in a bid to prevent the deletion of 32 vacant posts and cut the pay of 16 office co-ordinators.

The Birmingham Post (p3) quotes Unison chief steward David Hughes: 'We believe that strike action is the last resort, but it seems to be the only language the council understands.'

A council spokesman said: 'A new model for neighbourhood offices aims to achieve a more efficient and cost-effective service which meets needs while avoiding the closure of any offices.'
