Birmingham City Council has warned all 513 infant schools in the city that a Christian group, the International Church of Christ, is targeting nursery-age children, BBC Radio Four's Today programme reported this morning.

Roy Pinney, Birmingham's cabinet member for education and lifelong learning, told the programme: 'The city council can't be too careful when it comes to issues around child protection.'

The council's action has been backed by the Church of England, teachers and parents, Today reported. But the International Church of Christ denied on the programme that it tries to recruit children.
