Traffic lights in Birmingham city centre that talk to each other could help relieve congestion in the city, the Times reports (p18).

The paper says that Birmingham has hired GEC Marconi to install the talking traffic lights which use a technique called Scoot which equips the traffic lights with magic eye sensors and as traffic builds the lights adjust themselves to allow the greater volumes of vehicles to pass.
