People who want copies of birth, marriage or death certificates can now get them at the click of a mouse.

Copies of certificates are available to buy online through East Sussex CC's website at eastsussex.gov.uk/copycertificates. All births, marriages and deaths registered in East Sussex (excluding Brighton & Hove) from 1837 to the present day are available - so the new service will be of special interest to family history buffs researching their family tree. Copies cost just£7 each plus£3 when you pay by credit or debit card via a secure payment method.

Bob Tidy, Lead Member responsible for e-government said the initiative would boost the Council's aim of making more services available online. 'This is another example of how we are using technology to make it easier for local residents to access our services. Instead of having to find contact details of different local registrars' people can now use our website as a one-stop shop and order direct.

'This initiative opens up 168 years of history - a vast online catalogue of birth, marriage and death certificates, so it will be a real bonus to people researching their family tree.'

People ordering certificates online fill out a form and once the order has been verified as correct, people will be directed to a secure payment site to add credit or debit card details.

As well as being able to order online, the Council has also made the form available to download and print so that residents can still write or type their information and then use the post if they wish.
