The leader of the Liberal Democrat group at Blackburn with Darwen BC has been cleared of benefit fraud on appeal, reported the Lancashire Evening Telegraph (Oct 8).

Paul Browne, 55, a former mayor, was convicted of misleading DSS officials about the workforce at his aerial erecting business and given a 12-month conditional discharge by Blackburn magistrates in July.

But judge John Phillips sitting at Preston crown court ruled that the evidence submitted by the DSS had been based on a brief conversation with the defendant rather than a formal interview and was therefore inadmissable.
