More than 100 streets in Blaenau Gwent are to be declared no go areas for open air drinking from the spring.

The Western Mail (p11) reports that Blaenau Gwent CBC councillors are introducing the measure to clean up the streets and prevent crime.

The action is based on the American idea of zero tolerance, says the paper.

A Blaenau Gwent CBC spokeswoman told the paper that the street drinking ban would be applied to areas which have been identified as being a nuisance.

'Drinking on the street is not an offence at the moment and we need a by-law to stop it.

'We will be putting signs up in the designated areas similar to signs that say you can't take your dog into parks. No budget has been set for the signs as yet.

'The by-law and fines have to be confirmed by the Home office and must be backed by public support.

'We are having public consultations at the moment asking the public if they support these moves and if they want it in their areas.'
