Four Blaenau Gwent CC Labour members have been charged with criminal offences relating to alleged false accounting at the authority, reports The Western Mail (p1).

The charging of the four councillors - mayor Steve Bartlett, ex-leader Bernard Assinder, former mayor Colin Jones and Brian Inch - results from a continuing inquiry by Gwent police fraud squad into alleged financial irregularities.

It is thought that the four members now face suspension from the Labour party pending the outcome of the action. They will appear before Newport magistrates on 21 December.

The council said last night: 'The authority is concerned to learn that charges have been laid against members of the authority but hope that his long-running investigation, which has been continuing for over a year, is coming to a close. In the meantime, the council is continuing to co-operate with the police investigation.'
