English regional assemblies would take second place in Labour's timetable to Scottish and Welsh assemblies reports the Yorkshire Post (p4).

Reporting on an interview on London Weekend's Television's Dimbleby programme, the Post highlights Blair's admission that the party could even have lost power before they could be put in place.

And in a speech to Labour's North and Yorkshire regional conference, deputy leader John Prescott stressed the importance of substituting democratic accountability for the quango, reports the Post.

'People in the North have every right to influence what a government office in the North does, and regional action is crucial to economic development' he said.
