Labour leader Tony Blair snubbed an attempt by deputy prime minister Michael Heseltine to extract promises of a blank cheque to keep the millennium dome project alive, according to the Guardian (p3).

In a meeting yesterday, Michael Heseltine left without securing a promise from Mr Blair of unqualified Labour backing for the exhibition.

The paper describes the encounter as remarkable for revealing a shift of power at Westminster, with Mr Heseltine having to approach Mr Blair for approval. The meeting took place at Mr Blair's office.
