Labour leader Tony Blair has hinted the party will end universal child benefit payments for wealthy families.

In an interview with Today newspaper (pgs 16 & 17) he also confirmed that Labour was looking at ways of offering a minimal state pension guarantee and combining public and private pensions.

Mr Blair also said that there was a 'great deal' that can be done 'if we look for ways of combining public and private finance

'The Tories are so incredibly narrow-minded about this.

'The problems you've got with the Channel Tunnel, The London Docklands Development Corporation, were all because everything had to be done through the market and therefore we didn't get the sense of the balance of private and public funding you require.'
