Labour leader Tony Blair has pledged not to oppose plans to build a fifth terminal at Heathrow despite vigorous opposition from environmentalists and local Labour councils, The Guardian reports (p3).

Mr Blair has written to the chief executive of the British Airports Authority, Sir John Egan, saying that it would be inappropriate for Labour to adopt a stance one way or another prior to the results of the public inquiry.

The move has delighted the BAA, The Guardian reports.
