Labour is today set to press ahead with the next stage of the Tony Blair-led drive to strengthen links with the Liberal Democrats, according to The Financial Times (p8).

The prime minister will preside over a meeting of the joint Lab-Lib cabinet committee, with an agenda moving beyond constitutional issues for the first time.

Senior Liberal Democrats will discuss with ministers ways to develop Mr Blair's proposals for a European defence and security policy.

Later this year the two parties are expected to work together on welfare reform policies and preparations for the single currency.
