Union outrage has greeted news that the Labour leader's wife, Cherie Booth, is representing Brent LBC against allegations of unfair dismissal brought by 55 black and Asian former employees, reports The Times.

Ms Booth opened the industrial tribunal case yesterday by contrasting the efficiency of the Conservative regime against the former Labour authority.

Unison official Mike Custance is quoted in the paper: 'I simply cannot understand how the wife fo the Labour leader can take a job representing a Tory employer which is sacking workers.'

Ms Booth declined to comment on her role as champion of the Brent Conservatives but a Labour party spokesman told The Times that she was just doing her job.
