A proposal by shadow education secretary David Blunkett to allow teachers with 15 years' experience paid sabbaticals of up to 12 months would cost £5bn, the government claimed last night, The Daily Telegraph reports (p11).

Figures show that around 240,000 teachers have already served for 15 years.

Labour refused to accepts the figures and said sabbaticals would be for a term rather than a year.
