David Young, veteran Labour backbencher, is the first MP to be deselected by local party members using the one member one vote system, reported The Guardian (12 November, p8).

Mr Young, who had represented the safe Lancashire seat of Bolton South-east since 1974, lost to Brian Iddon, chairman of Bolton MBC's housing committee, the paper reported.
