Bolton Council's legal services are providing a three-star top-quality

The accolade - the top spot in the Audit Commission's league table -

followed an in-depth examination of the award-winning service.

Bolton's legal services were among the first in the country to be put

under the best value microscope and the team of 46 lawyers, administrative and back-up staff emerged with flying colours.

In their verdictthe Audit Commission praise the legal services division for giving excellent support to Council initiatives and corporate priorities. Clients who spoke to the Best Value Inspectors particularly commended legal services' flexibility, accessibility and responsiveness.

Bolton Council Legal Services is already the holder of an Investor in

People Award, ISO 9001Quality Award and a specialist legal service award from the Law Society - Lexcel.

Councillor Bob Howarth, Leader of Bolton Council said: 'Like other similar departments across the country our legal services have been tested against the private sector and proved that they were value for money for the town's Council Tax payers. This is an independent assessment of the service and praises the way we do things, our efficiency and our businesslike approach and is an excellent reflection on the dedication and commitment of the whole team.'

The Director of Central Services, Peter Wilson, added: 'This is a splendid result - for everyone in legal services, and for the colleagues we work with - we will continue to work to build upon this success'.
