Bolton town hall bosses are compiling secret hit lists ready for cuts of up to £10 million, the Manchester Evening News reports.

The paper says that the town hall chiefs have been told to prepare for the worst possible outcome as the government assesses how much it will let councils spend.

Deputy leader Guy Harkin said the borough's best estimate is that it may have to lop 5% off its budget of £200 million. Education may bear the brunt of cuts and libraries could close, the Manchester Evening News suggests.
