The Bolton Evening News reports that Bolton MBC's 60 members are paid a total of£301,000 expenses, compared to Lancaster City Council's£130,000 for 63 councillors.

The leader of Bolton, Bob Howarth, said that one couldn't compare the two authorities, because Lancaster is a non-metropolitan borough.

He said: 'Bolton is a metropolitan borough which has responsibility for things like education and social services. We are also indirectly involved with the police, transport and fire authorities.

Bolton compares very favourably with the other Greater Manchester authorities, where we are about half way down a league table.'

From next year Bolton is set to bring in a new system where a basic allowance of£4,800 a year would be paid to all councillors, but there would be no attendance allowance. Special responsibility allowance would be paid to councillors who are in senior positions.
