Duncan Jevons, who stole 42,000 books from public libraries over the course of 30 years, made a surprise appearance at the auction of the 12,000 volumes which police were unable to return, reported The Independent (26 August, p4).

But Mr Jevons, who was released from prison after serving half his 15 month sentence, decided he felt too embarrassed to bid and left without buying, The Independent reported.
