Scottish Borders Council has put 40% of its home care service out to tender in an attempt to make budget savings.

Director of social work Colin Johnson told LGC the authority had assessed the service and found that 40% of home care was concerned with comparatively routine domestic tasks, rather than intensive personal care. It is this portion of the service that is being tendered out.

'We took the decision, in the face of budget restrictions, that we should try to maintain all our care services and this enables us to do that within our budget,' said Mr Johnson.

Scottish Borders will cut £140,000 from its £2.4m home care budget through tendering. A further £100,000 reduction will come from other methods.
