Scottish Borders Council has decided to sell its entire housing stock of 7,000 homes to a single housing association.

The stock will go to Scottish Borders Housing Association and the council hopes to use around£17m generated by the sale to repay debts.

Councillors decided the offer represents value for money and the Scottish Executive is urging other councils to follow suit.

Some tenants have expressed concern, but Oliver Angus, chairman of the housing association, said: 'Tenants can rest assured that we will put in every effort to provide a service they will be happy with.'

A spokesman for the council said: 'There was a very big vote in favour of taking the plans forward.'
