London borough officials are lobbying the government for an extra £144m a year to keep roads and bridges in repair and improve accident blackspots, reports the Evening Standard (p5).

Transport officials are now deciding which schemes qualify for the 'transport supplementary grant' which means a 50% government subsidy.

Twenty-three boroughs have proposed £74m worth of schemes to improve main roads. Westminster intends to be the top spender with schemes totalling £16m.
