Conservative and Liberal Democrat councillors on Bradford city council have joined forces to demand an overhaul of the authority's internal management arrangements and working practices.

The opposition groups issued a joint statement inviting council leader Tony Cairns to join them in carrying out an investigation into the council's organisation and procedures.

Mr Cairns told the Yorkshire Post (p9): 'I'm astonished that politicians who constantly carp about so-called financial waste are saying we should spend a small fortune on private consultants.

'I'm not particularly interested in the wild and inaccurate statement from what appears to be a temporary new political alliance on the council, although I will be interested to see how long it lasts.'
