The leader of Bradford City Council, Gerry Sutcliffe, was named yesterday as the Labour candidate to fight the Bradford South by-election, following the death of MP Bob Cryer, reports the Yorkshire Post (p3).

Mr Sutcliffe, a full-time trade union worker, retained his council seat in the local elections earlier this month and has been council leader for two years.

The Conservative candidate for the Bradford South seat will be Ronnie Farley, Conservative group leader on the same council for six years.
