City Challenge money has turned around the largest council estate in Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Post reports in an article on city development in Bradford (p10).

Five years ago Bradford won £39m of City Challenge cash. Since then it has spent £16,000 on each of 8,500 houses on the Holmewood estate and built around 200 new houses.

When the scheme began only 37% of residents said the estate was a good place to live; that figure has risen to 75%.

The article says mistakes were made in Bradford during the past 25 years when the city concentrated on short-term modernisation, while neighbouring Leeds preserved the past and created a more thriving city centre. It looks at how Bradford is gearing up for its centenary celebrations.
