Bradford MBC is on course to hand over its entire education department to private consultants, supervised with an appointed board with only two councillors, reports The Guardian (p7).
A highly critical Ofsted report on the LEA is expected before the local elections next month, when Labour is in danger of losing overall control.
To date, only Islington LBC's education authority has gone wholly private, but Bradford is volunteering for change, rather than facing a breakdown of services.
The 'partnership board' would monitor the contractor chosen through tendering to run central education services. Bradford would retain only the power to approve broad budget decisions and to use scrutiny groups of councillors to review aspects of the private company's work.
