The total estimated cost in England of a teachers' pay increase in 1996/97 of 3.8% is around £395m, Robin Squire said in response to a Commons question from shadow education secretary David Blunkett (WA 12 Feb col 439).

The minister published a table showing for each authority the cost of such an award based on updated 1993/94 expenditure on teaching salaries in nursery, primary, secondary, and special schools.

The spending on salaries in 1993/94 for each authority is uprated by the pay awards in each year - 1994/95 (2.9%); 95/96 (2.7%) and 96/97 (3.8%).

He said the 1993/94 expenditure figures are the latest available for local education authority maintained schools in England.
