Auditors have launched an investigation into a payment by Brecknock BC to an organisation called the Friends of Breconshire, the Western Mail reports.

The paper says the investigation follows an official complaint by one on the council's own members, Hugh Pattrick who claimed that the donation appeared on the agenda without warning and an opportunity to look at it properly.

The Western Mail reports that the decision to donate the cash to the group, which is a limited company set up to have the district upgraded to a unitary authority, was made in March.

Brecknock chief executive Richard Doyeland is reported as saying that he personally advised the council that the £10,000 payment was legal.
