The Liberal Democrats' victory in Brent East is a major boost for Simon

Hughes' campaign to be London's next mayor, Liberal Democrat shadow to the ODPM, Edward Davey, said today.

'Brent East confirms that Liberal Democrats are the main challengers in

Labour's urban heartlands. The Tories have no councilors in local government

in cities like Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle and it is therefore the

Liberal Democrats who offer the positive alternative.

'On issues ranging from scrapping the unfair council tax to investing in

public services the Lib Dems are setting the policy agenda.

'This result in Brent East has particular significance in London as the

Liberal Democrats didn't just beat New Labour but defeated Ken Livingstone

and Old Labour too.'
