Confusion over whether local authorities are responsible for certain bridges

over railways has led to delays in safety work, due to be carried out in the

wake of the Selby rail crash, BBC Radio Four's Today programme reported this

morning.

Rail safety expert Prof John Knapton says work on up to 200 road bridges

over railways has yet to be completed. This is often becuase nobody knows

whether the Highways Agency or the local authority is responsible for a

bridge, Today reported.
