A member of Brighton and Hove Council has decided to leave the Labour Party and applied to join the Scottish National Party, according to The Herald (p3).

James McGliney, who is orginally from Kirkcaldy and has been a member of the Labour Party for 25 years, decided to switch allegiance after a visit to Scotland over the Christmas holiday.

He said: 'I came home at the New Year and discovered that all my old friends in Scotland had joined the SNP. Who am I to buck the trend?'

An SNP spokesman said: 'Clearly we welcome Mr McGinley and hope the people of Brighton and Hove have a warm and friendly attitude to his change of heart. People from Brighton to Banff are seeing through the spin doctoring of Labour.'
