The Express (p2) runs a story accusing Bristol city council of halving grants to scouts and guides in favour of a group, Freedom, for young lesbians and gay men.

The paper quotes local Conservative opposition councillors and prospective parliamentary candidate Michael Roe as well as Bristol MP Michael Stern who accuse the council of pandering to pressure groups.

Pat McLaren, vice chairman of the council's leisure services committee told the paper: 'It is crass prejudice such as this which makes groups like Freedom even more necessary.'

Berkeley Davies, a member of Freedom's management committee said: 'This is completely outrageous homophobia. The Scouts get a lot of support from the public and from private individuals.

'Anyone can make an application to the lottery - I suggest the Scouts do so.'
