The Royal British Legion has written to every local authority and town and parish council in Britain asking for co-operation in organising street parties on May 8 to commemorate the end of the Second World War in Europe, reports BBC Leicester.

Major George Rock of the RBL, said he hoped there would be at least one party in every parish to coincide with the lighting of a European chain of beacons by heads of state.

The RBL would be working hand-in-glove with local authorities to organise these.
