Chancellor Gordon Brown is to join deputy prime minister John Prescott for the closing session of the annual conference of the Local Government Association next month.

It has also been confirmed that Justin Webb, presenter of BBC TV Breakfast News, is to chair the opening session on Wednesday 8 July. Other speakers include:

- William Hague, Conservative party leader in his first address to an all party local government audience

- Hilary Armstrong, local government minister

- Don Foster, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for education and employment

- Helen Liddell, economic secretary, treasury

- John Monks, general secretary, TUC

- Chris Haskins, chair, Northern Foods

- Adair Turner, director general, CBI

The theme for the event is 'National Questions Local Answers', with the conference providing a showcase for how local authorities provide the solutions to national issues such as crime and disorder, education and the health of communities.
