Chancellor Gordon Brown has urged public sector unions and managers to 'seize, not squander' the opportunities he says have been created by the government's economic policies.

Addressing the TUC in Glasgow, Mr Brown said all of Britain should work to build on the stability and employment growth now in place.

Defending the fiscal rectitude of the Labour government's first two years, he said the success of those policies meant additional public spending went towards education and health rather than debt repayment and unemployment.

He told delegates: 'We, the government, will accept our responsibilities in the public sector, inviting trades unions to work with us to improve both conditions of service and the condition of each service.'
