Tax relief for vocational training was extended to National Vocational Qualifications and Scottish Vocational Qualifications at level 5 in yesterday's Budget.

Children under 16 are excluded from tax relief, as are 16 to 18 year olds in full time education at a school, and those undertaking training wholly or mainly for recreational purposes or as a leisure activity.

The government's intention is to broaden the tax relief to vocational training at all levels, while ensuring it is given only for genuine vocational training.

The changes will take effect from 1 January 1994.
