The government's tax and benefits plans in the housing market have been attacked by Britain's leading house builders, reports The Times (p21).

Sir Lawrie Barratt, chairman of Barratt Developments, said:

'We are violently opposed to the move, we believe it is fundamentally and morally wrong. It is very much a retrograde step that leaves unemployed people helpless like that.'

The company is lobbying the government along with other builders to rethink its decision to withdraw support for the newly unemployed.
